Edward ‘Bobby’ Carter (1902-1982) was only 28 when he became RIBA Librarian in 1930. This lecture will highlight his central role in promoting modernism and new ideas within the British architectural establishment and making the RIBA Library a central point of contact for European architects. It will also explore his tireless work, as Secretary of the RIBA Refugee Committee, to assist architects seeking to flee Nazi-occupied Europe.

Valeria Carullo is Photographs Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects. Her main area of research is the relationship between photography and architecture in the Inter-War years. She is currently working on a research project on the RIBA Refugee Committee and refugee architects of the late 1930s.
